News Highlight
OpenAI unveiled the Responses API to foster the creation of independent task-performing AI agents, set to replace Assistants API by mid-2026. The Responses API allows for tasks like company file searching and website navigation, despite current limitations in task automation reliability.
These tools will help enterprises to build agents with advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. The Responses API, which combines Chat Completions and Assistants API, will become the de facto API for building agents for complex tasks. The new tools include web search, file search, and computer use, which help developers connect models to the real world and make them more useful in completing tasks. OpenAI's approach is screenshot-based, while Anthropic uses command outputs from tools.
OpenAI and Anthropic have announced the release of their Agents SDK, an open-source software development kit (SDK), which includes new agents, handoffs between agents, guardrails, and observability tools. The SDK is an upgraded version of Swarm, an experimental SDK, and is compatible with the Responses API and Chat Completions API. OpenAI plans to include every tool and feature in the Assistants API before phasing it out in mid-2026. The SDK is expected to work with models from other providers.
